Well, for one, after multiple attempts at leaving Android Messages as my default messaging app, I just can't get past the quirks that it continues to have, after all this time. ![]() I've heard that this is an attempt to solidify it as the standard Android messaging app that most carriers and phones will come preloaded with. Fast forward a few years to today, and you have Google changing the name of the app to Android Messages. Textra, in my opinion, was the reigning champion of fluid, feature filled SMS apps in the Play Store at the time, and Google Messenger didn't change my opinion on that. It did look like it had potential though. Lag, lack of customization, poor image compression, just to name a few. When Google released their SMS app titled Google Messenger, it had some issues.
